Strand Planning

How Many Pearls Are in a Strand? Wholesale Calculator Guide

Estimate freshwater pearl count per 16-inch strand by pearl size, knot spacing and usable length, then confirm specifications before ordering.

How Many Pearls Are in a Strand? Wholesale Calculator Guide

The basic count formula

Convert the usable strand length to millimeters and divide it by average pearl pitch. Pearl pitch is the space each pearl occupies along the string, including knots or gaps. For example, 406 mm divided by an 8 mm pitch gives about 50 pieces before clasp and construction allowances.

Why nominal diameter is not enough

A pearl sold as 8–9 mm may not measure 8.5 mm along the drilled axis. Oval, potato and baroque pearls can have very different width and drill-to-drill length. Measure a representative group in the intended orientation and use the average axial dimension for planning.

Knotted versus unknotted strands

A knot between every pearl adds spacing and may reduce the number of pearls needed for the same finished length. Thread thickness and knot tension also matter. Approve a production sample using the real thread, clasp and findings instead of adding a universal knot allowance.

Ordering loose pearls for production

Include breakage, drilling rejects, color matching and size sorting in the material plan. The correct reserve depends on quality and design complexity. Ask the factory to state expected usage per finished piece and the agreed overage policy before purchasing a bulk loose-pearl quantity.

What to put on the specification sheet

Record finished end-to-end length, clasp inclusion, pearl size range, shape, drill direction, knotting method, thread, extender, allowed tolerance and target appearance. Pearl count may be recorded for reference, but should not replace the finished measurement and approved sample.

Frequently asked questions

How many 8 mm pearls make a 16-inch strand?

About 50 is a useful unknotted estimate, but actual count changes with size variation, knots and clasp allowance.

Does a clasp count in necklace length?

It can, so the purchase order must state whether finished end-to-end length includes the clasp.

Should I order pearls by count or weight?

For finished jewelry, approve usage per piece; for loose material, suppliers may quote by strand, count or weight depending on product.
