Inventory Care

How to Store Bulk Freshwater Pearls and Finished Jewelry

Store loose freshwater pearls, strands and finished jewelry safely by controlling abrasion, pressure, dryness, chemicals and inventory handling.

How to Store Bulk Freshwater Pearls and Finished Jewelry

Protect nacre from abrasion

Pearl nacre is softer than many gemstones and metal components. Keep loose pearls, strands and finished pieces in separate soft pouches, lined trays or divided containers. Prevent clasps, chains and sharp findings from rubbing against pearl surfaces during storage and transport.

Avoid chemicals and heat

Keep inventory away from perfume, hairspray, cleaners, acids, workshop fumes and direct sunlight. Do not store pearls near plating or adhesive processes without protection. Excess heat can affect thread, glue and some treatments as well as packaging materials.

Manage humidity sensibly

Pearls contain organic material and should not be subjected to prolonged extreme dryness. At the same time, damp storage encourages mold and packaging damage. Use a stable indoor environment and avoid improvised soaking, wet cloth storage or uncontrolled humidifiers.

Organize lots and samples

Label each lot with product, size, color, quantity, supplier batch and inspection date. Keep control samples separate from saleable stock. Use first-in, first-out handling when appropriate and isolate new deliveries until incoming inspection is complete.

Inspect finished jewelry

Check thread tension, knots, clasps, adhesives, plating and pouch condition periodically. Wipe handled pieces with a clean soft cloth before returning them to storage. Replace damaged packaging and record any recurring issue by batch to support supplier feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Can freshwater pearls be stored in plastic bags?

Short-term separated storage may be practical, but avoid long-term extreme dryness, pressure and rubbing; use suitable soft protection.

Should pearls be stored with silica gel?

Do not create an excessively dry microenvironment; storage should be stable rather than aggressively desiccated.

How often should inventory be inspected?

Set a schedule based on stock turnover, packaging and environment, and inspect immediately if heat, moisture or chemical exposure occurs.
