Freshwater Pearl Luster and Surface Inspection Guide

What strong luster looks like

High-luster pearls produce bright, relatively crisp reflections that appear to come from within the nacre. Softer luster creates broader, hazier highlights. Clean the samples gently before comparison because fingerprints and dust reduce apparent reflection quality. Compare pearls of similar color and size when possible.

Use consistent inspection lighting

Use a diffused daylight-equivalent lamp and a neutral gray or white background. Keep distance and viewing angle consistent. Avoid mixed showroom lighting, direct flash and heavy phone processing. Review the same batch at normal viewing distance first, then use a loupe for diagnosis rather than making every decision under magnification.

Classifying surface features

Cultured pearls commonly show pinpoints, small pits, rings, ridges, wrinkles or flat areas. Evaluate the number, size, contrast and position of these features. A mark hidden near a drill hole may be less important than one on the front of a stud. Define acceptable visible areas for each product.

Separate luster from surface grade

A highly lustrous pearl can still have visible growth marks, and a smooth pearl can have weak luster. Score the two factors independently before combining them into a commercial decision. This avoids rejecting attractive designer pearls or accepting smooth but lifeless stock based on one simplified grade.

Create an inspection standard

Retain an approved sample plus upper and lower limits. Photograph them in a fixed lighting setup and write practical acceptance language. During pre-shipment inspection, select pieces across cartons or batches rather than reviewing only the best tray. Record defects by type and location to improve future sorting.

Frequently asked questions

Is luster more important than surface?

It depends on the product, but luster strongly affects visual appeal; buyers should score luster and surface separately.

Can phone photos accurately show luster?

They help, but exposure, flash and processing can distort reflections, so physical samples remain important.

Are small surface marks normal?

Yes. Cultured pearls are organic gems, and acceptable marks should be defined by product position and target quality.
