Use controlled neutral light
Photograph near diffused daylight or under a consistent color-controlled light. Avoid mixed warm and cool sources. Lock white balance and exposure where possible so the camera does not brighten dark lots or neutralize real color differences.
Show wide and close views
Begin with an image of the full lot or representative tray, then add medium views and macro details. The wide view reveals consistency; close-ups reveal luster, surface and drilling. Do not substitute a few hand-selected pearls for batch evidence.
Include scale and references
Place a ruler, caliper reading, neutral grey card or labeled size tray in selected frames. References should not obscure the pearls. For color-sensitive orders, photograph the retained control sample beside the proposed batch under the same light.
Use video for luster
A slow movement of the tray or camera shows how reflections travel across the nacre and helps distinguish bright luster from a static highlight. Keep the video steady, avoid filters and show more than one area of the batch.
Create an approval record
Save original files with date, batch number and product specification. Record exactly what the buyer approved and whether approval covers color, shape, surface, quantity or only general appearance. Link the evidence to the purchase order and pre-shipment inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Can pearl quality be approved from one photo?
One photo is rarely sufficient; use full-batch views, close-ups, video and written specifications.
Why do pearls change color on camera?
Lighting, white balance, exposure, background and screen calibration all affect perceived color.
What should appear in a batch video?
Show the complete lot, controlled movement under light, size references and representative close-up areas.
