Why grade names differ
A supplier's grade is a sorting language for its own inventory, not a global scientific standard. Two lots called AAA may differ in luster, surface, roundness or matching. Ask what the grade means for that product and compare actual samples at the same size, color and shape.
Evaluate luster first
Luster is the brightness and sharpness of reflections on the nacre. Strong luster creates crisp highlights and visual depth; weaker luster looks chalky or diffuse. Rotate pearls under a consistent neutral light and compare several areas of the batch. Do not judge luster from one overexposed image.
Define surface tolerance
Record the type, number, size and position of acceptable natural features. For earrings and pendants, the visible face may need a cleaner surface than the drill side. For strands, the standard may focus on overall appearance at normal viewing distance. Cracks and damaged drill edges should be treated separately from ordinary growth texture.
Measure shape and size
Roundness and calibrated size can add sorting cost. Measure several pearls with calipers and note the drilling-axis dimension for ovals or baroque forms. Define whether the lot may contain a gradual range or must stay inside a narrow interval. Visual matching remains important even when individual pieces pass the measurement.
Control color and matching
State bodycolor, acceptable overtone and whether natural variation is part of the design. Pair earrings more tightly than loose components sold individually. For strands and sets, review color transitions, luster consistency, shape rhythm and size graduation across the finished arrangement.
Build an inspection standard
Once the visual standard is approved, record its measurable tolerances, sample references and acceptance rules in a freshwater pearl purchase order specification.
Keep a labeled approved sample, specification sheet and batch evidence. Describe typical acceptable pieces and clear defects. Decide the sample size and action for nonconforming goods before shipment. This turns a subjective grade discussion into a repeatable buyer-supplier quality process.
